Victor, NY – Dec. 20, 2010 – New Scale Technologies has won a “Best Electronic Design” award for 2010 from Electronic Design magazine, the largest design-focused publication in the electronics market. Components editor Mat Dirjish awarded the SQUIGGLE RV linear drive system top honors in the components category for motors and motion-control systems. Other winners were Apple’s iPad in the consumer electronics category, Osram Sylvania’s latest LED in the display components category, and Intel’s Atom Processor E600 Series in the embedded microprocessors category.

Dirjish noted that the SQUIGGLE motor is an established component within the motor and motion-control arena, and that each new version has come with greater improvements. The SQUIGGLE RV system introduced a driver chip smaller than the motor itself, and the ability to operate directly from a battery as low as 2.3 VDC without the need for voltage boost circuits. The small size and reduced voltage requirement are industry firsts for miniature piezo motor systems, creating a micro motor and drive combination that is more than five times smaller and uses 40% less power than comparable electromagnetic linear drive systems.

“This award confirms the value of New Scale’s micro-actuator innovations for electronic products used in mobile, medical and industrial applications,” said Ralph Weber, product manager at New Scale Technologies. “We are honored by this award, and by the attention from global OEM companies who are designing our SQUIGGLE motors into smaller, more precise, lower power products for consumer electronics, medical devices, machine vision systems, biometric scanners, communication networks and other applications.”

An article about the SQUIGGLE RV system and the other 2010 award winners appears in Electronic Design’s annual Best Electronic Design issue published December 9th and in its online edition.

“Our staff and contributing editors…ferret out the best of the many new technologies, products and standards that we have seen and wrote about over the past 12 months,” wrote Joe Desposito, editor-in-chief of Electronic Design. “These guys are in the trenches every day covering this industry and they know about all the great new innovations that have been introduced in the last year.”
