The MPM System, the first multi-probe micro-manipulator optimized for use with new silicon neural probes, enables high-yield acute in-vivo brain recording and optogenetics

Victor, NY — February 16, 2017— New Scale Technologies has named Cambridge NeuroTech a worldwide distributor of New Scale’s MPM Multi-Probe Micromanipulator (MPM) System.

The MPM System offers motorized motion for Cambridge NeuroTech’s silicon neural probes, enabling high-yield acute in-vivo brain recording and optogenetics. It is based on New Scale’s piezoelectric M3-LS Smart Stages— the smallest, most precise piezoelectric postponing systems on the market, with proven precision and reliability in hundreds of commercial and scientific applications since their introduction in January 2014.

The MPM System surpasses current state-of-the-art manipulator systems by enabling independent positioning and control of up to five neural probes (each with seven adjustable axes) via an intuitive PC application with optional joystick control. The small footprint of the manipulators facilitates clearance for the virtual-task environments which are rapidly becoming a mainstay of modern neuroscience research. This innovative solution paves the way for neuroscientists to investigate multiple brain areas simultaneously as animals perform a variety of behaviors.

“Dr. Tahl Holtzman, founder of Cambridge NeuroTech, is an experienced neuroscientist and entrepreneur who helped guide development of the MPM System,” said David Henderson, CEO of New Scale Technologies. “He is an ideal partner to bring it to researchers using Cambridge NeuroTech’s cutting-edge silicon neural probes for electrophysiology and optogenetics.”

“The MPM System was developed by and for neuroscience researchers, meeting their needs for stability and precision along with high throughput and ease of use,” said Dr. Holtzman. “The compact system with a turn-key control application enables researchers to quickly configure complex experiments and to concentrate on accelerating discovery via optimizing data collection and through improved productivity.”
