Micro mirror angular pointing device is less than 1cm³ in volume

New Scale Technologies has been awarded its 19th US patent for a highly miniaturized, two-axis angular pointing device using its UTAF (Ultra-Thin Actuator Family) piezoelectric motor technology.

U.S. Patent No. 10,284,118, titled TWO-AXIS ANGULAR POINTING DEVICE AND METHODS OF USE THEREOF, issued May 7, 2019 to inventors David Henderson and Dr. Qin Xu.

“This patent expands our established UTAF micro motor technology to generate two axes of orthogonal rotation, over a range of approximately 20 degrees, in volume less than a cubic centimeter,” said David Henderson, CEO of New Scale Technologies.

Two-axis mirror “pointing” motion enables new applications for portable, handheld, mobile and wearable devices. These include moving tiny cameras for optical image stabilization, pointing laser beams using a single mirror surface, and micro display projectors.

New Scale Technologies offers a line of commercial micro motion systems including its piezoelectric linear micro stages and rotary micro stages with embedded controllers.
