SQL-1.8-RV Series SQUIGGLE motor with NSD-2101 piezo driver - the world's smallest linear drive system. The 2.8 x 2.8 x 6 mm and 1.8 x 1.8 mm IC are powered by direct battery input as low as 2.3 VDC with no need for a boost circuit.

SQL-RV-1.8 Developer's Kits are available for qualified OEMs. Battery operated kits let OEM designers evaluate the SQL-RV-1.8 SQUIGGLE micro motor for custom development programs supported by our engineering team. Kit includes an SQL-RV-1.8 motor, optional position sensor, controller and New Scale Pathway software.

New Scale creates small, precise and smart motion systems using our SQUIGGLE® RV Reduced Voltage micro motor and NSD-2101 drive IC, integrated into custom modules that deliver performance comparable to much larger systems. The SQL-RV-1.8 SQUIGGLE motor is the heart of our M3 micro mechatronic module design platform and many of our full-custom motion solutions.

The piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motor and miniature drive ASIC allow us to create motion features for products where they could not have been imagined before. This tiny linear drive system offers greater power efficiency, higher reliability, and ten times better precision than electromagnetic motors.

The new reduced voltage version of our patented SQUIGGLE ultrasonic piezo motor features state-of-the-art multi-layer piezo technology, advanced integrated circuit design and patent-pending control algorithms to achieve a number of industry firsts.

System Performance

The SQL-RV-1.8 and NSD-2101 drive IC provide a broad range of performance over a range of input voltages. Refer to the data sheet for motor force and speed as a function of input voltage to the NSD-2101 driver IC, as well as the power required at various voltages to achieve a range of linear motor speeds.

New Scale develops custom smart motion systems using the SQL-RV-1.8 and NSD-2101 components. In each development project, we guide OEM customers through system performance trade-offs including force, power, speed, size and lifetime. We deliver integrated motion solutions to meet each customer’s needs.

NSD-2101 piezo motor driver IC

The NSD-2101 piezo motor driver is only 1.8 x 1.8 mm in wafer-level form (BGA package). It converts 2.3 to 5.5 VDC battery input directly to high frequency AC power to control the SQL-RV SQUIGGLE motor. Custom designed to drive the SQUIGGLE RV multi-layer motor, the NSD-2101 provides advanced proprietary features such as frequency tracking and hybrid speed control to optimize motor performance while minimizing power consumption over a broad range of operating and environmental conditions. NSD-2101 accepts commands from your system processor over a digital I2C serial interface.

MC-3300 motor controller

The MC-3300-RV is a full-function motor controller useful for system evaluation and development. Connect it to a PC via via the USB interface and use the New Scale Pathway Software (included) for evaluation and embedded system development.

The MC-3300-RV accepts position input from New Scale's NSE-5310 position sensors or from other digital or analog position sensors. for closed-loop system control.

The MC-33DB-RV daughter board contains two NSD-2101 ICs and is easily removed from the MC-3300-RV controller for direct input via I2C.

New Scale Pathway Software is a flexible and sophisticated development tool for micro motor evaluation, system development and prototype test. (click for larger image)

The MC-3300-RV mother board includes the processor, 12-bit A/D converter for analog position feedback, digital differential quadrature feedback, I2C feedback for NSE-5310 position sensors, and a USB interface. The MC-33DB-RV daughter board contains two motor driver ASICs.

New Scale Pathway Software and development platform

New Scale Pathway™ Software is a flexible and sophisticated tool for rapid evaluation of New Scale motors, sensors and motion systems. An easy-to-use, "point and click" graphical user interface allows you to select tabs, enter values in boxes (speed, step, frequency, etc.) and click graphical buttons (jog, run, etc.) to control New Scale systems. All features are accessible using mouse and keyboard.

The software also features a powerful script generator that enables you to create and run automated commands and sequences for almost any motion control task. The script editor is fast, flexible and easy to use, even by non-programmers.

Open-loop vs. closed-loop operation

SQL-RV motor Developer's Kit

SQL-RV motor Developer’s Kits provide a convenient platform for evaluation of SQUIGGLE RV motion system performance.

The SQL-1.8-RV SQUIGGLE motor is an open-loop motor with 0.5 μm resolution. We recommend using a linear sensor for closed-loop operation when repeatable step size, absolute position or precise velocity control is needed. Developer's Kits

Developer’s Kits allow engineers to evaluate a tiny, closed loop motion system reference design with integrated SQUIGGLE RV micro motor, NSD-2101 piezo motor driver and NSE-5310 position sensor. The kits demonstrate the performance of these tiny components pre-mounted in an integrated motion system.

This developer’s kit is designed to help engineers define system specifications for subsequent development of custom micro motion modules with New Scale Technologies.
