Victor, NY - October 19, 2007 - New Scale Technologies, Inc.
today announced the commissioning of its micro-precision automated
manufacturing line in Victor, NY. The company is using the new line
for high-volume production of its patented SQUIGGLE motors, the
world’s smallest linear motor. The $1M expansion allows New Scale to
increase its production capacity to 100,000 tiny SQUIGGLE motors per
month.
“This is a major milestone in our drive to capture high-volume
markets such as mobile phone cameras and electronic locks and
latches,” said Dan Viggiano III, vice president and general manager of OEM and
industrial accounts at New Scale. “The successful commissioning
proves our ability to produce tiny piezoelectric motors at high
enough volume and low enough cost for OEM (original equipment
manufacturer) applications.”
New Scale has several existing and anticipated contracts to
deliver SQUIGGLE motors for use in mobile phone camera modules,
electronic locks and other miniature devices. Piezoelectric SQUIGGLE
motors are only a few millimeters in size and draw far less power
than conventional electromagnetic micro motors.
The new automated assembly line can produce a SQUIGGLE motor
every 90 seconds, with upgrades scheduled for 2008 that will more
than double that speed. Highly flexible tooling allows for
conversion of the line from one motor model to another in minutes.
Electronic test algorithms enable 100% qualification of every motor
produced.
“The custom-built, state-of-the-art robotic assembly line
delivers the micrometer precision needed to assemble our tiny SQL
Series motors,” said Michael Perrotta, director of manufacturing at
New Scale. “Automation not only increases our production capacity,
but also provides process monitoring and control to increase
repeatability and product reliability. We will use the manufacturing
processes and technologies developed here as we expand our
operations worldwide.”
The company is currently evaluating several potential locations
for its next facility, with a target production capacity of one
million motors per month.
The investment in Victor was funded by the company’s ongoing
profitable operations, with additional support from Ontario County’s
Office of Economic Development Revolving Loan Fund.
About New Scale Technologies
New Scale Technologies (www.newscaletech.com) creates disruptively small
motion systems based on our patented piezoelectric SQUIGGLE® motor, the world’s
smallest linear motor, and TRACKER™ position sensor. The ultrasonic SQUIGGLE motor
is smaller, more precise, less expensive, more robust and more power-efficient
than other micro motors. The TRACKER position sensor integrates a magnetic sensor
with on-chip digital encoder, for smaller size and higher resolution than miniature
optical encoders. We create complete motion systems integrating micro motor and sensor
technology with supporting electronics (ASICs) developed with our partner
austriamicrosystems.
New Scale’s micro motors, encoders and micro-actuator modules enable design engineers
to create smaller products including mobile phone cameras, electronic locks and
intelligent fasteners, nano-scale fluid control including lab-on-a-chip systems,
medical devices including miniature drug pumps and endoscopes, optics and
imaging systems, automotive modules, lasers, aerospace and defense systems,
cryogenic and MRI-compatible instruments, and consumer electronics including
micro fuel cells.
SQUIGGLE is a registered trademark and TRACKER is a trademark of New Scale Technologies, Inc.
