New SQL Series Piezo Motor is a Tiny, Robust, Low-Power Device for Portable Electronic Products

Now even smaller, the patented ultrasonic linear motor offers long travel and sub-micrometer precision for mobile products including phone cameras and medical devices

December 5, 2005 - Victor, NY - The tiny SQL Series SQUIGGLE motor, announced today by New Scale Technologies, Inc., offers precise linear motion at low power for today’s smaller portable OEM electronic products. Applications include medical devices, wireless security cameras, and mobile phone camera auto focus/optical zoom assemblies.

At 2.4mm x 2.4 mm, the new SQL series motor is half the size of the company’s earlier motors for OEMs. It features a new metal/ceramic composite construction for greater robustness and lower cost.

The patented ultrasonic motor design has much lower power consumption than miniature electromagnetic motors. It holds its position when the power is turned off, further conserving battery life.

Standard SQL evaluation models are available now in 2.4 mm and 3.4 mm size, with customizable shaft length and travel range.

SQL Series Specifications:

Minimum Motor Dimensions 2.4 mm x 2.4 mm x 10 mm
Maximum Travel 30 mm
Resolution Better than 100 nm
Speed (no load) Up to 100 mm/s
Stall Force Up to 4 Newtons
Minimum Input Power (moving) 100 mW (5 V)
Input Power (stationary) Zero mW (Zero V)

OEM product designers need to consider tradeoffs among load, speed and power for the SQL series motor. Contact New Scale or visit www.newscaletech.com/motorsforOEM.html to download speed vs. load tables and additional specifications.

“Our new composite SQUIGGLE motors are even more efficient and robust, and easier to manufacture in high volume at low unit cost,” said David Henderson, president of New Scale Technologies. “With single-chip ASIC motor controllers under development by several leading semiconductor companies, we offer the smallest, most powerful motor on the market for OEM product designers.”

An SQL evaluation kit for product developers is available now starting at $950. The kit includes an SQL series motor, a credit-card sized drive electronics card, cables, and software for RS-232 computer control. A manual control handset is optional.

About the SQUIGGLE Motor

The patented SQUIGGLE motor design uses a threaded nut and screw to create precise linear movement in a very small space. Piezoelectric ceramics create ultrasonic vibrations in the nut, causing the screw to rotate and translate with high precision. SQUIGGLE motors are smaller, more precise, less expensive and more efficient than conventional electromagnetic motors. In addition, they use 90 percent fewer parts and require no gear reduction, which eliminates many failure modes. This ceramic motor is fundamentally compatible with high magnetic fields including MRI chambers. SQUIGGLE motors are used in nanotechnology research, microelectronics, optics, lasers, biotechnology, medical devices, aerospace and defense, fluid control, and office/consumer products including mobile phone cameras.

About New Scale Technologies, Inc.

New Scale Technologies, Inc. (www.newscaletech.com) makes miniature ceramic motors that enable our customers to create smaller products and research tools. Our piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motors are smaller, more efficient and more precise than conventional motors. With only seven parts and no gears, this patented piezoelectric motor design uses ultrasonic vibrations to create precise linear motion. New Scale’s miniature motors are compatible with extreme environments including vacuum, very low (sub-Kelvin) temperatures, and high magnetic fields.
