Infotonics Technology Center Plans Joint Research With New Scale Technologies

Partnership to accelerate integration of patented SQUIGGLE® motor technology into highly miniaturized products such as phone cameras

August 25, 2005 - Victor, NY - New Scale Technologies of Victor and the Infotonics Technology Center of Canandaigua announced today their intent to undertake a joint research project to produce working prototypes of a number of highly miniaturized products that integrate New Scale's piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motor with Infotonics' microsystems technology. Due to its small size and unique design, New Scale's patented SQUIGGLE motor opens up a wide range of applications for which conventional motors are unsuited. Infotonics will work with New Scale to further miniaturize the motor technology, and integrate it into modules for specific high-potential commercial markets. Potential applications include:

  • Tiny integrated auto focus and optical zoom modules for mobile phones cameras. Such modules would improve image quality without adding bulk or reducing battery life.
  • Medical devices, such as drug delivery modules and pumps for microfluidic systems. The devices would be small enough to be implanted in a patient, and non-magnetic to be safe for use in and near MRI systems.
  • "Smart" clothing for commercial, defense and NASA customers, such as shoes that automatically adjust insole stiffness based on the terrain and the wearer's stride.

David R. Smith, Infotonics' chief executive officer, said, "We are pleased to provide the microsystems research facilities and expertise to help New Scale further miniaturize and commercialize their innovative technologies. If successful, this initiative could certainly help drive economic growth in our region."

David Henderson, president of New Scale Technologies, said, "The additional resources and facilities available to us through the Infotonics Center will help us to move faster to capture high-volume market opportunities, such as the emerging market for nearly one billion mobile phone cameras. Camera phones are going to be the most popular method for taking pictures in the future, and our products help make these images better. Infotonics' expertise in microsystems integration and commercialization will enhance our global competitiveness."

About New Scale Technologies, Inc.

New Scale Technologies, Inc. (www.newscaletech.com) makes miniature ceramic motors that enable our customers to create smaller products. Our patented SQUIGGLE motors are bigger than MEMS devices but smaller than conventional motors. We generate precise movement using ultrasonic vibrations, which makes our piezoelectric motors powerful, precise, simple, and compatible with extreme environments.

About the Infotonics Technology Center

The Infotonics Technology Center Inc. (www.infotonics.org) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates New York State's Center of Excellence in Photonics and Microsystems. Infotonics is structured as a consortium whose founding participants include Corning, Inc., Eastman Kodak Company, and Xerox Corporation. Academic participants include some 20 New York State colleges and universities. Infotonics' goal is to establish a unique, world-class research and development facility to enable rapid commercialization of new products. This initiative will provide major benefits to the region, including creation of jobs and attraction of new companies and investment revenue.
