Ultra-thin closed-loop nanopositioning stage exerts 5 Newton force without heating

Integral SQUIGGLE® motor and encoder provide closed-loop positioning in 17 mm tall stage

June 20, 2005 - Victor, NY - A new closed-loop positioning stage from New Scale Technologies, Inc. provides 5 Newtons of force in a thin, 17 mm profile. The SQ-2115 motorized stage contains an integral optical encoder and a piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motor, which supports vertical loads of up to 0.5 kilograms with negligible heating.

"The tiny SQUIGGLE motor allows us to create a very thin motorized stage, with the unique ability to hold its position in power-off mode," said David Henderson, president of new scale technologies. "This means that the stage can support a vertical load indefinitely without generating heat, unlike conventional motorized stages."

The SQ-2115 is designed for automated nanopositioning in research and industrial instruments. This low-profile closed-loop stage is ideal where space is a premium, including microscope stages and vacuum chambers. A high-vacuum compatible option is available.

Applications include:

  • adaptive optics
  • imaging
  • lasers
  • waveguide alignment and assembly
  • optical microscopy
  • wafer inspection
  • nanolithography

The patented SQUIGGLE motor uses ultrasonic vibrations of a threaded nut to directly rotate a mating screw. This creates linear motion with 20 nm resolution, high stiffness, very low noise and negligible heat.

SQ-2115 stages are easily assembled into two-axis and three-axis precision positioning systems. New Scale's SQ-3300 controller allows the user to drive up to three motorized stages using Windows-based control software provided.

The SQ-2115 motorized closed-loop stage specifications include: (Complete specifications)

About New Scale Technologies, Inc.

New Scale Technologies, Inc. (www.newscaletech.com) makes miniature ceramic motors that enable our customers to create smaller products and research tools. With only four parts and no gears, this patented piezoelectric motor design uses ultrasonic vibrations to create precise linear motion. New Scale's miniature motors are compatible with extreme environments including vacuum, very low (sub-Kelvin) temperatures, and high magnetic fields. They are used in nanotechnology research, microelectronics, optics, lasers, biotechnology, medical devices, aerospace and defense, fluid control, and office/consumer products including mobile phone cameras.

SQUIGGLE is a registered trademark of New Scale Technologies, Inc.
