SQUIGGLE linear motors are five times more efficient and ten times
more precise than conventional electromagnetic motors. In addition,
they use 90 percent fewer parts and require no gear reduction, which
eliminates many failure modes. The mechanical design is simple and
inherently inexpensive to manufacture in high quantities.
New Scale is currently working with semiconductor suppliers to
develop a fully-integrated single-chip SQUIGGLE drive system. Sample
SQ-306s motors are available now with high-volume production to
begin later in 2005.
"The SQ-306s illustrates the fundamental advantages of SQUIGGLE
ceramic motors: They scale to very small dimensions, yet maintain
high power efficiency and outstanding precision,” said David
Henderson, President of New Scale Technologies. “SQUIGGLE motors
enable customers to create smaller mobile products with longer
battery life."
About New Scale Technologies
New Scale Technologies
makes miniature ceramic motors that
enable our customers to create smaller products. Our patent-pending
SQUIGGLE motors
are bigger than MEMS devices but smaller than conventional motors.
We generate precise movement using ultrasonic vibrations, which
makes the motors powerful, simple, and compatible with extreme
environments. Our Squiggle motor uses piezoelectric actuators to
vibrate a nut and directly rotate a mating screw in a tiny assembly,
with an order of magnitude fewer parts than conventional motors.
