New SQUIGGLE motor for OEMs boasts 10x precision, 5x efficiency compared to electromagnetic motors

Tiny piezoelectric motors offer controlled speed, long battery life for phone camera auto focus/zoom mechanisms, implantable drug pumps, MRI-compatible instruments

April 6, 2005 - Victor, NY - New Scale Technologies, Inc. announces the SQ-306s SQUIGGLE motor, a tiny high-resolution piezoelectric motor for OEM products.  The SQ-306s is fifty percent shorter than previous SQUIGGLE models, with improved resolution and higher electrical power efficiency for long battery life - a critical need in mobile devices.

Consumer electronics applications include auto focus and optical zoom assemblies in phone cameras, as well as “smart” clothing, shoes and other recreational equipment. Medical applications include implantable and wearable drug pumps, and MRI-compatible instruments.

SQUIGGLE linear motors are five times more efficient and ten times more precise than conventional electromagnetic motors. In addition, they use 90 percent fewer parts and require no gear reduction, which eliminates many failure modes. The mechanical design is simple and inherently inexpensive to manufacture in high quantities.

New Scale is currently working with semiconductor suppliers to develop a fully-integrated single-chip SQUIGGLE drive system. Sample SQ-306s motors are available now with high-volume production to begin later in 2005.
