Unlike DC servo motors or microstepping stepper motors, piezoelectric
SQUIGGLE motors hold their position when the power is off. This
allows the SQ-2206 controller to sequentially drive up to six
motors, with each motor holding its set position when the
controller switches to drive the next motor.
Users control SQUIGGLE motor speed and position using a manual handset,
or by connecting a personal computer via the RS-232 port. The
SQ-2206 controller can also be commanded using analog signals,
enabling customers to integrate position sensors and achieve closed-loop
servo control.
SQUIGGLE motors have position resolution to 20 nm and travel range up to 50
mm. Each SQUIGGLE motor ships with a “smart” connector that
remembers its optimum drive parameters including frequency, phase
and voltage. The SQ-2206 controller automatically downloads and
uses these parameters when a motor is connected, providing rapid
setup.
The SQ-2206 is powered by an AC wall plug transformer or optional
battery pack. It is available now at $1,500.
About New Scale Technologies
New Scale Technologies (www.newscaletech.com) makes miniature ceramic
motors that enable our customers to create smaller products. Our patent-pending
SQUIGGLE motors
are bigger than MEMS devices but smaller than conventional motors. We
generate precise movement using ultrasonic vibrations which makes
our products powerful, simple, and compatible with extreme
environments. Our SQUIGGLE motor uses piezoelectric actuators to vibrate a nut and directly
rotate a mating screw in a tiny assembly with an order of
magnitude fewer parts than conventional motors.
