January 25, 2005 - Victor, NY - New Scale Technologies, Inc. announces the SQ-306 SQUIGGLE motor, the
smallest piezo motor available. Just 4 mm in diameter and 20 mm in length (with 6 mm travel), the new SQ-306
SQUIGGLE motor is 50% smaller than the first SQUIGGLE motor introduced in December 2003. The
patent-pending design is smaller, quieter, and 100 times faster than comparable piezoelectric motors on the market.
SQ-306 SQUIGGLE motor is ideal for:
- Implantable medical devices that are MRI compatible
- Microfluidic pumps for automated drug discovery
- Night vision systems for homeland defense
- Autofocus mechanisms for mobile phone cameras
- Nanotechnology tools for the research lab
SQUIGGLE motors use piezoelectric ceramic elements to create vibrations in a threaded nut which directly
turns a mating screw.
(See how they work for more information on the SQUIGGLE motor operating
principle.) For the new SQ-306, this unique design delivers 250 nm position resolution and 6 mm travel range.
The speed can be precisely controlled from microns per second to more than 10 mm per second.

SQUIGGLE motors are suitable for cryogenic and in-vacuum positioning. They generate no magnetic fields and can
be made entirely from non-ferrous materials, making them MRI-compatible and safe for medical devices.
The SQ-306 is also available in a metal housing to drive miniature linear positioning stages. The housed motor
directly replaces manual micrometers to motorize fine-positioning stages and mounts in optical or mechanical systems.
“The SQ-306 reflects our continuing innovation in miniature ceramic motors, driven by our customers’ demand for
smaller products,” said David Henderson, President of New Scale Technologies. “This simple ceramic motor delivers
high precision and force in a tiny assembly, making it the ideal actuator for biomedical, nanotech, consumer product
design and other applications.”
About New Scale Technologies
New Scale Technologies makes miniature ceramic motors that enable our
customers to create smaller products. Our
patent-pending motors are bigger than MEMS devices but smaller than conventional motors. We generate precise
movement using ultrasonic vibrations which makes our products powerful, simple, and compatible with extreme
environments. Our
SQUIGGLE motor uses piezoelectric actuators to vibrate a nut and directly
rotate a mating screw in a tiny assembly with an order of magnitude fewer parts than conventional motors.
